'He was lying' - Micah Richards busts hilarious Sergio Aguero myth at Man City

Micah Richards has revealed Sergio Aguero pretended he could not speak English to get out of media duties.

Few players lit up the Etihad Stadium more than the Argentine during his decade-long stay at Manchester City. A staggering 260 goals places him top of the club’s all-time goalscoring charts and that last-minute goal to clinch the Premier League in 2012 immortalised him at Eastlands forever.

Despite spending 10 years in England, Aguero, who retired after suffering cardiac problems two years ago, was a man of few words and rarely gave post-match interviews. He did famously speak to Sky Sports following his last City appearance but there was little interaction with the press beyond that.

Speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, former City teammate Richards let slip that Aguero could speak English the whole time. His lack of understanding was merely a ploy to avoid fulfilling media duties.

“This is the thing Gary (Lineker),” Richards said. “Aguero, he was lying. When they were asking him to do interviews he would say ‘I don’t speak English'. He spoke brilliant English (and) knew exactly what to say. He knew exactly what the slang terms were. He knew all the terminologies.

“Of course, speaking with your friends and having an interview are two different things but he just played on that so much and he got away with it. Muggins like me, James Milner, Joleon Lescott, all the English lads had to do the media because Kun just said ‘I don’t speak no English.’”
