‘Harsh’ - Jonny Evans makes David de Gea comparison with Andre Onana at Manchester United

Jonny Evans has commended Andre Onana for requesting to speak to the media after his howler against Bayern Munich but says the Manchester United goalkeeper ought not to be overly harsh on himself.

Onana kept his second clean sheet of the season in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley with the help of centre-back Evans, who started his first United game in eight years. The match prior, though, Onana made a handling mistake that led to Bayern’s first goal in their 4-3 Champions League win.

After the game, the Cameroon star faced the TV cameras and shouldered the responsibility for the defeat, calling it one his “worst games”. He said: “It’s a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down … We just have to move on. This is the life of a goalkeeper and, if we didn’t win today, it’s because of me.”

Evans said he had seen many such situations across his long career, including some of his own doing, and insisted Onana should not be too critical of himself. He compared his start to that of predecessor David de Gea, who made a string of errors in his first season at the club before going on to enjoy a lengthy stay.

Reacting to Onana’s decision to front up to the interview microphone, Evans told TNT Sports: “It’s a big thing for him to do that, he didn’t have to do that. It’s difficult for any player to come into any club and hit the ground running.

“Maybe he’s being a bit harsh on himself. Experience over the years, I’ve seen that quite a lot and experienced that myself so [he should] not be too harsh on himself.
