Hamilton Accies defender suffered skull fracture in sickening head clash as star remains in hospital

Hamilton Accies defender Kyle MacDonald remains in hospital after it was confirmed he suffered a skull fracture in Saturday's League One defeat to Alloa.

The 23-year-old, who hails from East Kilbride, collided with Wasps midfielder and ex-Accie Miko Virtanen at a corner and was knocked unconscious.

The game was halted for six minutes while he received medical treatment and he was later seen speaking with medical staff after being stretchered off the field of play.

He was taken to hospital for further treatment on Saturday and the club have revealed the extent of his injury.

A statement from Accies read: "Kyle remains in hospital where it was confirmed he sustained a fractured skull at Saturday’s match.

"He is stable and hopes to be out later today.

"We are all supporting him, and he will obviously be out for the near future."

A statement from boss John Rankin praised the response from medics.

It read: "Our main concern is Kyle’s health and the fact he is on his way to recovery. He will obviously be out of action for an unconfirmed period of time.

"I would like to thank the quick reaction from our medical team in dealing with this stressful situation. I would also like to thank Alloa manager for contacting our player directly to check on his well being.

"Kyle’s family has obviously gone through a traumatic time and will support him as well as the club in his recovery."

Following Saturday's match, manager Rankin expressed serious concern for his player.

He said: "He's taken a really nasty one. He is really confused, upset, he can't recognise some people and, as a human being, I am really worried for him.

"I have grown close to him over the last six months and I hope he is okay tonight."

Alloa boss Andy Graham said:
