Hamilton Accies clinching relegation play-off slot would be bigger than cup win, says star

Ryan Fulton says Hamilton Accies clinching a relegation play-off place would eclipse them winning the SPFL Trust Trophy.

And the 26 year old goalkeeper says winning silverware earlier this season will mean nothing if Accies are relegated.

That’s what’s at stake as they head to Arbroath on Friday, needing a win and for rivals Cove Rangers to lose or draw against Morton.

Hamilton would then move into the play-off where they would play against either Alloa Athletic or Airdrie in their semi-final, but defeat will see them automatically relegated to League One.

The former Liverpool kid said: “This is bigger than the cup final, 100 per cent. The cup final doesn’t really mean anything if we don’t stay in this league.

“It’s massive for us, we know what’s at stake, not just for us, but for the club and the fans as well, so I think it’s bigger.

“Everyone’s families are affected, staff that work here and everything else – there’s a lot more than just us staying in the league at stake.

“We understand that, we know that, and it’s not all in our hands, but we can only do our job and hope for the best from there.

“It would be absolutely massive to win. The main thing is to stay in this league now.

“Obviously at the start of the season that wasn’t the target, we thought we could have done better, but for now that’s definitely the ideal scenario that we can have.”

Should Accies negotiate their way into the play-offs, they would face either Alloa or Airdrie in midweek with a second leg on Saturday, May 13, while the other side involved will play Falkirk for the other final place.

And Fulton believes they can overcome that test if they get there.
