Hamilton Accies captain says livelihoods on the line after Inverness defeat

Hamilton defender Dylan McGowan says Tuesday’s defeat to Inverness has put livelihoods on the line at the club.

The Australian says Accies shot themselves in the foot as Inverness came back to beat them 2-1 at New Douglas Park, leaving them in a precarious position in the Championship where a play-off looks like their best hope of survival with just two league games remaining.

McGowan said: “I’m well aware of where we are in the table, and the other two play each other on Saturday [Arbroath v Cove Rangers].

“We’ve played an extra game already, so at the moment eighth isn’t mathematically gone.

“But I think when you look at it and the way we performed in patches, we could make eighth, but we could be the bottom end of League Two, to be honest with you.

“We have to try and show a level of consistency and a level of maturity in games.

“This isn’t a laugh and a joke situation, this is livelihoods on the line, and if you need to make a foul, clear the ball, or be horrible to play against, you actually need to do that.

“There’s no point in saying it in the dressing room afterwards, or holding your hand up and saying ‘that’s my fault’ – it’s too little, too late.

“We’re at the business end of the season and the quicker a lot of us realise that – myself included, I’m not going in on the team here – we really need to get the finger out.

“If the play-offs is the best we can get, then we need to make sure we get that, and then deal with them.”

McGowan admits Accies are now hoping for results in other games and said: “We’re starting to run out of games and looking around, hoping that other teams are going to do us favours.
