Greek island 'chaos' as Brits vow to 'never return' to beautiful destination

British holidaymakers who were caught up in the pandemonium of overcrowded tourist spots on one of the world's most picturesque islands have sworn off returning.

The disgruntled tourists shared their experiences of how their idyllic vacations to Santorini turned into a nightmare due to the overwhelming crowds.

Their accounts come a week after a high-ranking politician on the Greek island advised locals to remain indoors as 11,000 cruise ship passengers swarmed Santorini in a single day, eager to soak up its charm. Annually, 3.4 million people journey to the Aegean Sea island to wander around its white-washed buildings and witness its renowned sunsets.

Debbie Bustin was one such visitor who vowed to never return after her experience told the Mirror: "I was horrified that donkeys were expected to go up and down the hill all day with visitors on their backs in searing heat."

She also described the chaos as people jostled for the best spot to watch the sunset: "The tiny cobbled streets were packed with visitors and people were starting to get their 'positions' for the sunset hours before it happened. It was ridiculous and totally spoiled any romantic moments you intended to have struggling to see through the hoards of people."

Debbie further recalled the overwhelming crowd after the sun dipped below the horizon: "Once the sunset went down it was like a mass exodus and thousands of people descended into the village streets and you found yourself shoulder to shoulder with people just to get out of the place."

Samantha Morris had a similar encounter when her cruise ship docked at Santorini, only to find three other ships had already beaten them to it.
