Dog trainer shares breeds she'd never own – one is second most popular in the UK

In the UK, there are over 222 recognised dog breeds, each with unique traits.

They are bred for different reasons too. While some make for great lap dogs, other pups are specifically raised to be high energy so they can work.

Some breeds, like Labradors, make for great guide dogs as they are loyal and intelligent. Meanwhile, powerful German Shepherds often work for the police and Sheepdogs are great on farms.

Getting one of these pets may require more work as they need more stimulation. What's more, even seasoned professionals have their preferred breeds and ones they'd rather not have.

In an exclusive chat, behaviour and training expert Carolyn Menteith shared: "The secret to having a happy life with a dog and making sure they have a happy life with us is to choose a dog who needs to do the things that we can give them an appropriate outlet for.

"We can't expect them to change to fit into our environment. We have to be sure we can give them the environment they need to thrive. That being said, when it comes to dogs I would never own, there are just three..."

Carolyn remarks on the unparalleled stamina of Siberian Huskies – who tend to love going on long walks and runs. If you're not keen on exercise, the strong-willed breed may not be for you.

She added: "If you are a long-distance runner who trains every single day, keeps your house at temperatures that resemble... well...
