Graham Potter is not the answer Manchester United need right now and it's obvious why

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag would need to have completely taken leave of his senses not to realise the jeopardy his job is in at present.

When he arrived at Old Trafford, Ten Hag would have been under no illusions of the scale of the job or the urgency for success. Since Sir Alex Ferguson, the Reds have been starved of success and in his first season, the Dutchman rectified that.

While winning the Carabao Cup is not high on the bucket list for supporters, it was a break from the disappointment and heartache we had become accustomed to. Now into his second campaign, hopes were high for United to push on.

However, further behind the scenes drama and players phoning it in, have placed Ten Hag in peril. This was underlined this week when United crashed out of Europe with a whimper and reports surfaced in the national press about Sir Jim Ratcliffe apparently meeting with Graham Potter in a view to test the water on his enthusiasm for the top job at Old Trafford.

Talk of Ten Hag's imminent demise may be premature but it goes to show how things change so quickly in football. Although this doesn't mean a change of manager, midway through the season will have the desired results.

Sacking the Dutchman now would prove the club have not learnt any lessons from the past. There is very little a new manager can do with a bunch of players which have been assembled by several previous regimes. Ten Hag is discovering that, to his detriment, this very minute.

INEOS could arrive before Christmas or after the festive season but neither option would allow Potter the time to rebuild the squad in his image.
