Graeme Souness has Rangers stat bombs detonated by Simon Jordan in spiky radio row

Graeme Souness was armed with stats he claimed proved Celtic’s win WASN’T a demolition derby – only for pundit Simon Jordan to shoot down the Ibrox legend.

Light Blues boss Philippe Clement was criticised for rhyming off positive numbers from his side’s display at Parkhead despite a 3-0 defeat in the east end of Glasgow, leaving he Belgian still searching for a first victory over his fierce rivals.

Souness claimed Rangers are only “three or four players” short of matching their rivals but accepts the club’s financial position makes it difficult. But on talkSPORT he said of the game: “If you’re going to win football matches you have to put the ball in the back of the net and Celtic have better strikers. I’ll read some stats and pretend you don’t know the result. Celtic had 53 per cent possession and Rangers had 47 per cent.

"That’s not bad for an away team. Celtic had 14 shots and Rangers 13. Celtic had four on target and Rangers had four on target. Celtic had five off target, we had five off target. Does that sound like a one-sided game?

“There’s no doubt there is a gap and that gap for me, looking at it, is that Celtic have better strikers. Those stats are not suggesting to me that Celtic mullered them at Parkhead. Yes, they have opened up a gap. We finished second behind Celtic last season. Then they spent £28million and we spent £14m. So we’re chasing them but spending half the money. So there is a gap. Rangers aren’t in a healthy financial situation. Celtic are far better off financially and allows them to cherry pick players and take a chance on someone, whereas Rangers are buying under pressure where everyone has to come in and do a job. That’s a difficult situation to be in.
