Government gives update on free bus pass for pensioners amid axing fears

The Department for Transport has put to rest concerns over the future of the concessionary bus pass scheme, confirming that the UK Government will not be scrapping the initiative. Transport Minister Simon Lightwood reassured users after Conservative MP Graham Stuart inquired about the continuation of funding for the universal bus pass for pensioners.

In a written statement, Lightwood emphasised: "The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) provides free off-peak bus travel to those with eligible disabilities and those of state pension age, currently 66. The Government recognises the importance of the scheme, which supports local bus travel, assists with access to essential local services and helps those who use it to stay active and avoid isolation."

He further clarified: "The Government has absolutely no plans to withdraw the concessionary bus pass scheme." This announcement comes amid speculation prior to the Autumn Budget that it would be axed, following Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer's refusal to dismiss potential alterations to the free bus pass scheme during Prime Minister's Questions on September 11.

At the time he was pressed by Conservative MP Louie French to "rule out scrapping concessionary travel fares and Council Tax discounts" for millions of pensioners. His comments came as millions of State Pensioners were still grappling with the unexpected announcement from the Labour Government over changes to the Winter Fuel Payment.
