Goalkeeper Aaron Chapman says weekend performance at Ipswich shows Gillingham have what it takes to escape the drop from League 1

Gillingham goalkeeper Aaron Chapman is confident they will get the wins needed for survival if Saturday’s performance can be repeated on a regular basis.

Nobody could have begrudged the Gills had they walked away from Ipswich Town with maximum points, but with the woodwork saving the hosts twice and other chances being missed, they were able to scrape a 1-0 win.

Chapman, who is enjoying a spell in goal after playing second fiddle under the previous manager, said: “We are gutted not to get anything from the game but the performance was there and we have to take the positives from every performance.

“With performances like that we believe we are going to get out of the predicament that we are in.

“It is hard not to be gutted but with the performance out there the points will come and those have come with just a couple of days of training.

“We believe 100%, we wouldn’t be turning up to every game if we didn’t think we would get out of it, that shows we can get out of it.”

Gillingham are second from bottom, level on points with basement side Doncaster and eight points from safety. With 16 games left it’s a massive ask.

Chapman has been given the chance to show what he can do between the sticks under new boss Neil Harris. Chelsea loan goalie Jamie Cumming was ahead of him for the first half of the season before Watford’s Pontus Dahlberg joined to take over as the no.1.

Patience has paid off for Chapman as he is now the man with the gloves.

He said: “When Jamie was there we had the competition and Pontus is a great goalkeeper and we are keeping each other on our toes.

“It has been frustrating but Jamie was a very good goalkeeper and so it Pontus, this happens in football and you have to try and take the chance when you can.
