‘Go and prove it’ - Dean Henderson told to push through Newcastle transfer to fuel ‘his ego’

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been urged to leave for Newcastle to reach his full potential and reboot his career. The Manchester Evening News understands that the Magpies are nearing a deal for the England shot-stopper.

The 25-year-old has largely played second fiddle to David De Gea since his loan at Sheffield United. Henderson was knocking on the door of regular England call-up after his success for the Blades in the 2019/20 season, but he’s been unable to earn another cap since his debut in a December 2020 friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

He was given a stint between the United posts towards the back end of last season when De Gea was underperforming, but has been unable to reclaim his place following a bout of Covid and the Spaniard’s return to form. As a result, he pushed for a January exit, albeit in vain, and now he looks to be leaving Old Trafford this summer.

Former United defender Paul Parker says an exit will benefit Henderson and offer him the chance to earn his stripes once again. He described how the goalkeeper’s ego is fuelling his desire for more minutes.

Speaking to indiabetting.co.in, he said: "I personally do (think Henderson should leave for Newcastle). Give him the opportunity and go and prove it.

“You can prove it at Newcastle with the pressure on him from their fans. If he’s got an opportunity to play regular football, he’s gonna want it.”

He added: “He’s not gonna be sitting down, his ego is not allowing him. Dean Henderson going there will put himself at the forefront and people will really see how good he is.”
