Newcastle told to pay ‘great price’ for Dean Henderson

Although Eddie Howe has Martin Dubravka as his first-choice goalkeeper and Karl Darlow in reserve, Newcastle United are on the hunt for a new shot-stopper this summer.

The Magpies are reportedly in talks with Manchester United over Dean Henderson and have a good chance of procuring his signature as he’s struggled for first-team football at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old has been unable to dethrone David De Gea and may have to leave to establish himself in the Premier League, so Newcastle are trying to capitalise on the situation with a deal worth £15m.

Alex McLeish says he’s well worth the money as he’s reaching his prime, telling Football Insider: “He’s heading towards his prime. He has to get first-team football at as high a level as he possibly can. I think £15million would be a great price.

“You want to be assured that Dean is at his highest level and that he’s going to continue to be at his highest level for the next five to six years. Goalkeepers have a long shelf life so £15million seems pretty decent. Dean has proved his worth in the past, but he’s got to start playing.”

Henderson has risen through the youth ranks to United’s first-team, making 29 appearances in all competitions, conceding 25 goals with 13 clean sheets. He’s only had sporadic outings at United down the years and is making it clear that first-team football is a priority next season.

Dubravka wouldn’t be too pleased to see Henderson arrive at St James’ Park as his place may be in jeopardy next season, but Howe is expected to eventually strengthen every position at Newcastle. No player is safe.
