Gillingham play away to Colchester United in the Vertu Trophy Group G Southern section

Gillingham get the chance to showcase some of their bright young prospects again tonight.

The Gills beat Fulham under-21s 4-1 last month on a night where young players Logan Dobbs, Cruz Beszant and Stan Sargent all scored.

Sargent’s likely to miss out through injury but Louie Dayal - who also scored against Charlton - could also be involved as he was against Fulham.

Assistant manager Richard Dobson takes charge again as manager Gareth Ainsworth continues his recovery from heart surgery.

Senior players could also be looking for some minutes, including left-back Lenni Cirino, who impressed during his brief substitute appearances at MK Dons on Saturday.

Nelson Khumbeni has just returned from injury and is fit again while fellow midfielder Euan Williams had been hoping to feature after missing the opening two months of the season with a shoulder injury.

Marcus Wyllie has barely featured for the first team since his goal against Fulham in the last group stage match, with just one league appearance off the bench since then.

Goalkeeper Jake Turner is likely to play and Watford loan defender Travis Akomeah
