Gillingham 1 Salford City 2: League 2 match report from Priestfield Stadium

Gillingham were unable to recover from some early mishaps as they fell to a home defeat against Salford City.

The Gills lost goalkeeper Glenn Morris to injury, conceded twice and missed a penalty before Josh Andrews struck to get them back into the League 2 match.

Home side Gillingham pushed for an equaliser in the second half but it wouldn’t come and Saturday’s 2-1 loss extends the team’s winless run to five games in League 2, picking up just a point in that period.

Defender Sam Gale and midfielder Jonny Williams were both missing for the Gills following the yellow card flurry at Grimsby the week before but Remeao Hutton was free to play after a red card in the same match that was overturned on appeal.

Shad Ogie came into the back four while Sam Vokes was also named in the starting eleven. Him and Seb Palmer-Houlden played up top either side of Andrews.

The game was only a couple of minutes old when keeper Glenn Morris went down injured after taking a goal-kick, forcing an early change as Jake Turner took over in goal.

It went from bad to worse for the Gills in those opening moments as with seven minutes gone they fell a goal behind.

With Ogie caught out of position, Kallum Cesay played a ball through the middle into the path of Daniel Udoh and he kept his composure to beat the advancing Turner, who had raced outside of his area to try and make a challenge.

It had been a tough start for the Gills but they got a lifeline when Ethan Coleman was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. Bradley Dack looked to pick out the bottom corner but keeper Matt Young went the right way and saved well.
