Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth looks ahead to their League Two game against Scott Lindsey’s York City

Gillingham are likely to face their toughest game of the season so far when they travel to York City on Saturday.

That’s the view of the Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth ahead of their League Two trip to Yorkshire.

The Gills head north looking to make it four wins on the bounce after back-to-back victories at Priestfield.

They also arrive with confidence on the road after thumping Rochdale 4-1 in their last away game.

But York will provide a stern test, having won all three of their League Two home matches so far this season.

The Minstermen were crowned National League champions last season after collecting 108 points and have made a strong start back in the EFL.

Ainsworth said: “York City are a very good side, and [their head coach] Scott Lindsey knows his way around this division, out of this division, and upset a few teams last year.

“I think we've got to respect them, but also be confident that we can get back-to-back [away] wins. There's no reason we can't.

“My squad, I believe, is right up there. We've recruited well. We keep getting these curveballs with the injuries here and there, but we're still adapting and overcoming what we've been thrown. I've got to give credit to the boys, they've been brilliant. They've given everything.

“We're really looking forward to this game. People keep saying it's going to be a barometer. We've just had a barometer against Bristol Rovers and probably Tranmere, so I think we know. We're coming up to [playing] eight, nine, ten games in the league.

“You start getting the shape of the league after that, and what we don't want to do is have any similarity to last year, where we run off like a train and then fell away in a big way. We can't do that again.
