James Brophy reacts to his player-of-the-month nomination and playing different roles for Gillingham in the opening months of the League Two season

James Brophy has given Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth a selection dilemma ahead of Conor McManus’ return from international duty.

Brophy has impressed in two different roles for the Gills this season and is happy to play wherever he is needed – but his performances at left wing-back have given Ainsworth something to think about when McManus returns.

The 32-year-old started the season in an attacking midfield role before filling in at wing-back when McManus joined up with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

Brophy has played wing-back for previous clubs and was signed by Ainsworth with that position in mind, but his form further forward has left supporters keen to see him return to the attacking role.

He has certainly given the manager plenty to consider, with Brophy nominated for the League 2 player-of-the-month award for September after scoring three goals, including two superb strikes in the 4-1 win at Rochdale.

Asked about adapting to two positions this season, Brophy said he has enjoyed different aspects of both roles.

He said: “I've probably played wing-back more over my career. But I've played both positions over my career. I enjoyed parts of both.

“When you're on the side, you're kind of very much isolated with maybe an opponent. It's very much like a 1v1 game. In the middle of the park, you get maybe a bit more chaos, but you're always involved in the game.

“There's parts I enjoyed in both.”

McManus returns from international duty on Friday and, if fit, will give Ainsworth another option, with Brophy quick to acknowledge the contribution of the youngster.
