Rotherham United 1 Gillingham 4: Reaction from Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth after big League Two win

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth praised his coaching staff for playing their part in turning the game around at Rotherham on Saturday.

The Gills fell behind to a 17th minute goal and keeper Ollie Wright saved well from Kian Spence to deny the hosts a second before Ronan Hale volleyed Ainsworth’s men level. Rotherham had plenty of the ball in the attacking third but weren’t clinical like the Gills.

Ainsworth’s side soaked up plenty of pressure and went ahead when Lamin Sillah fired home on 60 minutes. He was then fouled for a penalty seven minutes later, which Hale converted. Tom Eaves was pulled over in the box late on for another penalty, which he scored from, in a game that finished 4-1 to the Gills.

“It was superb,” said the Gills boss. “It was really good, it's something that I didn't see coming, but I did as well because I know what I've got and we've done it before.

“Some of the play and some of the running for each other, some of the actual commitment for each other, goals are goals, they’re great, and Ronan's volley to get us back into it, superb, absolutely superb.”

Gills’ equaliser from Hale after 34 minutes was the first time they had a shot at goal and Ainsworth admitted he hadn’t been impressed with their start.

“I was fuming,” he said, reflecting on how they started the game. “I honestly was fuming because we didn't look after the ball as well as we can.

“We have this new style of play and we're going to stick with it, I'm telling you now, we love it but it's a bit of a hybrid, we can get it in behind but we also want to keep the ball at times and rest on the ball and that was really important in the second half that we got those messages to the boys.
