Gillingham 3 Bristol Rovers 0: Reaction from Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth after victory at Priestfield in League Two

Gareth Ainsworth believes Gillingham have “got something special” after they sent out a statement with a 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers at Priestfield.

The Gills produced an impressive display to sweep aside Steve Evans’ promotion-chasing side and extend their unbeaten run to six games.

James Brophy broke the deadlock with a brilliant finish 10 minutes into the second half before substitute Sheldon Kendall took centre stage.

The teenager came off the bench to score twice late on and seal a comprehensive victory.

And for Ainsworth, it was a result that showed just how far his revamped Gillingham side have come.

“Brilliant, brilliant attitude and endeavour and fitness and strength and everything that we've worked on. When it comes together, that's what you get,” said the Gills boss.

“Bristol Rovers are no mugs. Steve Evans is a good manager. He knows his way out of this division. But we'll see. We'll see at the end of the season where everyone is.

“I think we've got something special at the moment. We look fit, strong and still going at the end.

“It's a special moment and I think it's a marker to show how far we've come over the last few years. I can’t remember the last 3-0 we had at home - I can’t remember if I have had one. I will take that all day!”

Gillingham had already been the better side before the break but were unable to make their dominance count.

Ainsworth had challenged his players to be more ruthless and was able to call on the firepower on his bench.

“I said to the boys at half-time, we were the better team in the first half, we should take our chances,” he said.
