Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris turned 40 this week and is still pushing Jake Turner for the no.1 shirt

Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris turned 40 this week - and the club’s head coach says he’s still pushing for the no.1 spot.

Morris, who has had to sit and watch for much of this season, hit the milestone on Wednesday.

Jake Turner took over as no.1 choice keeper at the start of the season, limiting Morris to cup action, where he played against Southampton and Luton Town in the League Cup.

Morris also played all three EFL Trophy matches but Turner has had the gloves for the games in the FA Cup and League 2.

“First and foremost he is a great human being,” said head coach Stephen Clemence this week.

“He is great around the squad, he has been fantastic here for a while, he was plyer of the year last season and I can see in training he is still a very good goalkeeper.

“He is great for Jake as well, he helps Jake. I have seen some number ones and two where they don’t always connect, but he is trying to help Jake.

“He is still making wonderful saves on the training ground and to be doing that at 40-years-old is fantastic and long may that continue.”

Morris agreed a new deal with the Gills in April, for another season. He’s currently keeping Turner on his toes, pushing for a way back into the team.

“He is not here just to make up the numbers,” Clemence said. “Jake has had a very good season, he has done very well but Glenn is pushing him all the way.”

Morris got the donuts in at training, as is custom, which was appreciated by his team-mates, including 23-year-old midfielder Ethan Coleman, who was barely a toddler when the Gills keeper was making his first senior appearance, at Leyton Orient.

Coleman said: “He’s had a great career, unbelievable. He was saying the other day that he made his debut in 2001 and Dom Jefferies wasn’t
