Gillingham defender Conor Masterson backs former QPR team-mate Macauley Bonne to start find the net this season

Conor Masterson has backed striker Macauley Bonne to start finding the net.

The Gills front-man has done everything but score in the last few matches, and got in the right areas at Doncaster on Saturday, without being able to make it count.

Missed chances proved costly for the Gills as they lost 2-1 at Doncaster. Masterson headed in from a corner and admitted he too should have scored a second.

Masterson was with Bonne at QPR and the pair played a handful of games together there.

The Irish defender said: “I know Macauley had chances (on Saturday) but I think it will come for him, I have played with him before at QPR, I know what he is like.

“He’s a top player and it will come good for him.

“Once he gets that goal, like any forward, the confidence grows and he will score five or six, he is a top player at this level and we’re happy to have him.”

Masterson knows they have to be more clinical across the team, saying: “We played well overall and we deserved more from the game, that is football sometimes.

“We had enough chances, we need to put the ball in the back of the net, simple as that. We have to work on that on the training pitch.

“Like last week, where it could have been five or six, we’re playing well, we just need to be clinical and put things away, when we do that we’re a top side.

“I had a few chances, the forwards had a few chances, it is all of us who have to put the ball in the net. It is back to the drawing board, back on the training pitch and work hard and get back at it.”

It was a training-ground move that led to his goal, nodding in Connor Mahoney’s corner after arriving onto the ball at the back post.

“We worked on it and it’s great for it to come off,”
