Gillingham 2022/23 League 2 fixtures announced by the Football League; AFC Wimbledon away is their opening match

Gillingham don’t have far to travel for their first game of the new season.

The Gills will play away to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, July 30 when the League 2 season kicks off. Both teams are starting a division lower than last year after relegation at the end of the previous campaign.

Gills manager Neil Harris will have to watch that opening game from the stands after picking up a one-game touchline ban and a £1,000 fine late on last season. He was sent off at Portsmouth by referee Darren Drysdale.

Gillingham’s first home game of the season is against Rochdale on Saturday, August 6.

They face old boss Steve Evans’ Stevenage on Saturday, October 15 at Priestfield. The return match is on New Year's Day.

Grimsby Town are back in the Football League after their National League play-off promotion and the Gills face a midweek trip to Blundell Park, Cleethorpes, on Tuesday, September 13.

The Gills’ Christmas fixtures see them play at home to Colchester United on Boxing Day before a first trip to Sutton United on Thursday, December 29.

The longest journeys, into Cumbria, are both on Saturdays, heading to Carlisle United on Saturday, August 27 and Barrow on Saturday, April 1.

Gillingham’s league season ends on Saturday, May 6, when they make their first visit to Salford City.

Another first for the Gills will be a match at Harrogate Town. They travel to the North Yorkshire side on Saturday, March 4.

Gillingham players reported back for pre-season training on Wednesday.

Manager Neil Harris currently has 11 contracted players and will look to double that figure before the end of the transfer window. He is having to be patient to make his signings.
