George Kambosos Jr vs Devin Haney: Australian ready for the 'excuses' if he wins

George Kambosos Jr says he is expecting Devin Haney to come up with ‘a lot of excuses’ if he loses their undisputed lightweight title fight.

The Australian puts his WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring straps on the line in Melbourne on June 5 where he will be looking to win the WBC strap held by his American rival.

Should Kambosos Jr emerge victorious in Lucky Country, he will become Australia’s second undisputed champion, and first in 20 years.

Kostya Tszyu created history in 2001 when he beat Zab Judah for the IBF and Ring lightweight titles, and Kambosos is hoping to follow in his footsteps.

In a weird twist of fate, Judah will be in Haney’s corner at Marvel Stadium, as his father Bill Haney and trainer Ben Davison are both unable to travel to Australia at the moment for various reasons.

Kambosos told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Unfortunately, that’s the situation; that’s not my fault.

“I’m not the prime minister of Australia. I’ve actually reached out to a few high-profile people who have connections in the government to try to help the situation.

“I know there will be a whole lot of excuses once I destroy Devin Haney: about the father, about the trainer, about the jet lag, about everything.

“I’ve been trying my best to see if he can get in but, unfortunately, that’s not my problem.

“I’ve got all of my team here and I’m ready to fight.”

Unbeaten Kambosos, 28, has been involved in 20 fights – seven fewer than Haney – with the New South Wales native winning all of his contests.

He added: “I’m blessed to have my father with me in my corner, as he was for the Lopez fight.
