George Honeyman selects Hull City’s two standout players for 2021-22 season

The Tigers have earned their survival in the Championship for another year having earned promotion from League One 12 months ago.

The side has had to deal with transfer embargoes, managerial changes and a new owner throughout the season.

But that hasn’t stopped the team from doing enough to maintain their status in the second division for another campaign.

Honeyman earned the team’s Player of the Year award when the club earned promotion last season.

Now, the 27-year old has taken the positives from the side’s campaign and highlighted teammates who have performed under the pressure of the second tier, with exciting forward Lewis-Potter and veteran midfielder Smallwood standing out.

“I think there’s quite a few, to be honest,” Honeyman told Hull Live.

“The obvious ones are Keane [Lewis-Potter] with his goals tally and I think that’s something for him to kick on from year to year.

“If he wants to be the next Jarrod [Bowen], he’s made a good start but he’s got a little way to go. I know the type of lad he is, he will keep trying hard and kicking on.

“I think Richie Smallwood has been vital for us this year.

“His knowledge of the league, keeping us in games and doing the little stuff that people don’t always notice.

“The little stuff like in day-to-day training he sets the tempo and sets the standard. I feel it within games, when he’s not there I feel it.

“And when he’s not in the team you can feel that on the pitch. I’m surprised he’s undervalued by the supporters because I know they like their grafters and the lads who stick their foot in.

“He’s one of those who does it in a nutshell.”

Honeyman is one of eight players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, which could signal a summer of upheaval for the club.
