Gary Rowett speaks out on Luke Freeman’s arrival from Sheffield United at Millwall

Freeman arrived from Sheffield United on a season long loan deal that was secured on transfer deadline day.

Rowett believes the 29-year old will be a vital addition to the side, claiming he has the proven quality to compete at this level. 

“He works hard, is creative and has scored double figures in the Championship,” said Rowett, via London News Online. 

“When I think of Luke Freeman, I think goals from outside the box – left foot and right foot. He scores spectacular goals.

“It is about giving him the right type of environment to play his football and rediscover that form. That’s the challenge, for us and Luke.

“You can’t deny he has got proven quality and is a top Championship player.

“Luke was one we looked at in the summer but at that time Sheffield United still had him in their plans.

“At the end of the window we had a call to say he was available.”

Freeman has only appeared in four league games this season, with one start. However, he has plenty of Championship experience and even featured for the Blades in the Premier League under Chris Wilder. 

He earned the move to United after two fantastic seasons with QPR, where he scored 12 goals and assisted 18 more over two league campaigns. 

Rowett will be hoping he can recapture that form as his side look to regain ground in the play-off race.

Millwall fell down the league in January following a poor run of form that saw them lose three games in a row.

The Lions are currently 14th in the second tier, eight points adrift of a top six finish. 

Up next for Rowett’s men is a trip to Craven Cottage to face the high flying league leaders Fulham on February 8.
