Gary Neville says he's "proud" of Hannibal Mejbri after he goes in flying on Naby Keita

Gary Neville claimed he was "proud" of Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri, who should serve as an example to the rest of his teammates.

The Tunisian came off the bench for the Red Devils during their battering at Anfield. United were beaten 4-0 as the Merseysiders went top of the table, at least momentarily. Hannibal appeared with the game over at 3-0 and was dispossessed for the fourth.

However the teenager put in a robust tackle on Naby Keita, which drew an interesting response from Neville on commentary, who hailed the 19-year-old's actions. He said: "It takes a young kid to come on and show the rest of them how to sprint for the ball and put a challenge in. I'm actually proud of him! Maybe he doesn't like the idea of Liverpool players passing it round him. I wish the rest of them were the same."

Hannibal has played more games for his country than he has for United, having been signed back in 2019 from Monaco. He is tipped for big things and made an impression on the former Red Devil turned pundit. United's first-half left a lot to be desired at Anfield, however.

They were 2-0 down at the break, but were regularly being torn apart by the Reds. The visitors improved in the second 45 but still conceded two more, leaving the aggregate score for the two games 9-0. United are still in the race for the top four but the gap between them and the Premier League's elite was made clear.

"It's a decade of repeated failure and that's not good enough," added Neville. "Man Utd have got everyone in the country expected tonight. Really in a poor place. The end of the season can't come quick enough. Liverpool are top of their form and it was always going to be difficult. This is a broken Man Utd squad in this moment in time.
