Gary Neville's worst Manchester United transfer fear might come true under Erik ten Hag

The upcoming summer transfer window could not be more important for Manchester United.

After struggling through yet another underwhelming season, United will be hoping to bounce back in the forthcoming campaign under the stewardship of new manager Erik ten Hag. Optimism is high thanks to the Dutchman's exciting style of play, development of young players and winning mentality.

However, if Ten Hag is to be an immediate success then he will need backing in the transfer market, both financially and in whatever decisions he makes on incomings and outgoings. United are facing an exodus at the end of the season, with Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Lee Grant all leaving the club on free transfers.

As well as that, the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and even Marcus Rashford remain in doubt as well. Ten Hag will certainly need reinforcements in order to have an instant impact at Old Trafford.

As well as midfield, up front and centre-back, right-back is another position that will likely need strengthening as current options Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot have remained well below par this season. Plenty of intriguing options — Djed Spence, Tariq Lamptey, Jurrien Timber, for instance — have already been linked.

However, the latest right-back to be touted with a move to United is a compatriot of Ten Hag in Denzel Dumfries. Although highly-rated, that wouldn't be welcome news for another right-back in Gary Neville.
