Grey PE greenlights plans to name main rugby field after acclaimed alumni Siya Kolisi

Grey High School's main rugby field, the Philip Field, will be renamed after the 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

The renaming of the field will take place on 14 May when Grey High hosts Queen's College from Komani in what will be Grey's first Reunion weekend since 2019.

Queen's College recently renamed their main grandstand on their Victoria Recreational Ground after Kaya Malotana, the first black African Springbok and the school's first black first team rugby player.

Kolisi, who matriculated from the Gqebera-based school in 2009, captained the school's first team in his final year of school.

Kolisi is the first full-time Springbok captain after he was appointed to the position in 2018 and went on to lift the William Webb-Ellis Cup in 2019 after the Springboks beat England 32-12 in Yokohama.

He then entered hallowed territory when he played a crucial role in the Boks' resurgence from an opening Test defeat in the British & Irish Lions series to win the series 2-1.

The 30-year-old who was born on Youth Day has represented the Springboks 61 times since his 2013 debut against Scotland in Mbombela where he was man-of-the-match.

The school's main cricket oval is called the Pollock Oval, named after batting legend Graeme Pollock, who also attended the school.
