Gary Neville is right about Raphael Varane's Manchester United future

Manchester United head into 2024 on the verge of a new era for the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival will be ratified in the next six to eight weeks meaning by the end of the season, United will look a lot different behind the scenes. Considering the performances so far this campaign, it is fair to say no member of the playing or coaching staff can consider themselves safe either.

For too long, some of the same faces have been kept around while managers have chopped and changed. One of those with his future firmly in the air is Raphael Varane.

Currently, Varane is one of United's better centre-backs. The Frenchman's performance at Liverpool was captain-worthy and showed why he was signed two seasons ago.

However, his absence from the defeat to West Ham explained why 2023/24 could be his last. While illness cannot be helped, it was yet another example of Varane being unable to string a consistent run of matches together.

Since he joined from Real Madrid, Varane's time has been littered with injuries which have deemed him unreliable. Ultimately, Gary Neville's verdict on not just the 30-year-old but Victor Lindelof too, is true.

"If United are looking to renew Lindelof and Varane (on reduced terms) I’m worried," he wrote on X. "We have to start afresh as much as possible.

"Whilst these two aren’t bad players by any stretch, a message must be sent to everyone inside and outside of the club that it’s not going to tolerate the levels over the last few years."
