Gary Neville is being proven right by Erik ten Hag's Manchester United transfer strategy

As the disappointment of Saturday's FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City begins to subside, attention shifts towards Manchester United's summer transfer window.

The loss at Wembley highlighted several areas of the United squad that need to be strengthened should Erik ten Hag wish to bridge the gap to City. It will not happen overnight of course, Pep Guardiola has had several transfer windows since his arrival in 2016 to get the Blues purring.

But after a productive summer in 2022, the Reds will be hoping for more of the same 12 months on. Back in March, Gary Neville looked ahead to the transfer window and set out how he thought Ten Hag would attack it.

"I feel like Ten Hag is not going to sign [marquee names]," the former captain told The Overlap. "If new owners come in they’re going to want to make a statement, they’ll want to blow the transfer market open. I don’t think that will suit him.

"I think he’ll want those younger, hungrier ones that have still got that growth rather than the finished article. Casemiro obviously defeats that a little bit, but you look at Antony and Lisandro Martinez, they’re younger and hungrier.

"I think that’s the type of player he’ll want to add to this squad rather than saying: 'Oh, Kylian Mbappe’s available or so-and-so is available.'"

What we have seen so far from Ten Hag suggests Neville will be proven right. The Manchester Evening News understands 24-year-old Mason Mount has agreed personal terms with United. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund has been conducting video calls with Ten Hag about a possible move from Atalanta.
