Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher clash on rule change that impacts Manchester United and Man City

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have once again clashed on our TV screens over a controversial rule change that will impact both Manchester United and Manchester City this season.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar saw eye-catching numbers when it came to added time and similar measures and procedures have now been brought in by the EFL. With attention now turning to the Premier League campaign, the prolonged games have been a hot topic of conversation among players, managers and pundits.

Covering the curtain-raiser between Burnley and City, Neville and Carragher sat down with PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, before discussing the changes live on Sky Sports.

Addressing a predicted increase in stoppage time brought about by time-wasting, Neville said: "I think that they're going to have to pull it back from the EFL standards that was set last week. I watched the Salford game where we won 2-0 and it wasn't controversial, but it wasn't right.

"There were nine minutes of added time in the second half and then three minutes added onto that, so we played 12 minutes extra. I'm all for extending games and playing minutes that've been lost, but I'm worried that we're fixing problems that don't exist.

"I think we'll get to the six, seven minutes added level, but not to the extent we've seen. I watched 40-odd League Two games last season and there were hardly any times where I thought teams were set up to time waste.

"The game is the quickest it's ever been. I don't feel short-changed when I come to watch a Premier League game."
