Gary Lineker makes 'strange' Wolves comment as Man City complete Molineux rout
Wolverhampton Wanderers' wretched run of form continued against table-toppers Manchester City on Wednesday.
Kevin De Bruyne netted four goals at Molineux, with Raheem Sterling scoring the other, as City battered Wolves 5-1. Leander Dendoncker’s 11th minute equaliser was a mere consolation for a Wolves side which has now lost eight of its last 12 matches.
Wolves face Norwich City and Liverpool in their final two Premier League fixtures. Bruno Lage’s team can still mathematically catch seventh-placed West Ham, but their chances of playing European football evaporated on Wednesday night.
There was a brief moment of hope for Wolves against City when Dendoncker fired home, but parity only lasted five minutes before De Bruyne restored the champions’ lead. City’s second goal went down as an error on Jose Sa’s part after the goalkeeper failed to gather the ball under pressure from Sterling.
The ball ended up ricocheting off Sa’s chest into De Bruyne’s path for a tap-in. Commenting on the goal, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker said: “Once again Man City lead through a second for Kevin De Bruyne following a strange piece of goalkeeping.”
Despite Sa’s lapse against City, the goalkeeper has enjoyed a fine season for Wolves and is the favourite to win the club’s player of the year award. Sa has kept 11 clean sheets in the Premier League since joining Wolves for a bargain £6.8million from Olympiakos.
