Garth Crooks gives damning verdict on Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Ralf Rangnick decisions

Garth Crooks has slammed Manchester United's decision to bring Ralf Rangnick in as interim manager and believes Cristiano Ronaldo's return "has not worked".

The Reds staggered to defeat last time out against Everton which saw any remaining hope of Champions League football diminish. As a result, it stretched an unwanted record for the German tactician as they've just won three of their last 12 under his stewardship.

United started brighter than the relegation-threatened Toffees and forced Jordan Pickford into action on more than one occasion, namely through Marcus Rashford. However, Anthony Gordon's deflected strike saw them ensure the points stayed at Goodison Park.

Crooks pulled no punches on the decisions surrounding Rangnick and Ronaldo in his BBC Team of the Week column: "It was unfortunate for Marcus Rashford that Pickford was in such good form. On any other occasion the United striker might have scored two goals, had it not been for two outstanding saves from the Everton keeper.

"The save from Rashford's bullet header was without doubt the save of the match. It's now abundantly clear that Ralf Rangnick's appointment at United has not worked and neither has Cristiano Ronaldo's return.

"United have good players but the problem is they don't have a manager who can get the best out of them," he added. Spurs' win over Aston Villa extended the gap between themselves and the Old Trafford outfit to six points.
