Gareth Southgate's Manchester United comments resurface as England boss 'open' to Premier League job

England boss Gareth Southgate has hinted at a possible return to Premier League management, sparking rumours that he could be in line for the Manchester United job.

Despite the huge challenge that would come with managing United, Southgate suggested he wouldn't be put off. Previously, Southgate had indicated his willingness to take on any role in the Premier League.

This week, ESPN reported that Southgate is one of three managers on United's wish list. While no decisions have been made about the future of current manager Erik ten Hag, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe might be encouraged by an interview Southgate gave last December, The Sun reports.

Before rumours started about a move away from international football and towards a role with United, Southgate told Sky Sports he was open to returning to Premier League management. Reflecting on his previous three-year stint as Middlesbrough manager, he said: "Everybody would talk about Middlesbrough. 'Oh, he got Middlesbrough relegated'. Well, yeah, in the third year, we got relegated. But I had three years of Premier League management."

He added: "There isn't a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one [England], frankly. You're not going to have any higher profile, you're not going to have any greater pressure, you're not going to have any more complex issues."

The task at United is certainly a big one, as the club enters a new era under the co-ownership of Ratcliffe and INEOS. Southgate, who is currently leading the Three Lions, seems comfortable and confident in his role.
