Galloway Cricket Club receive bat used by Aussie great Sir Donald Bradman

A bat once wielded by one of Australia’s most famous cricketers was presented to Galloway Cricket Club at Gatehouse on Saturday.

The sporting antique, signed by legendary Aussie batsman Sir Donald Bradman and his famous 1948 touring team, was presented to club officials by Mary Coombs during a break in play at the Cally ground.

Mary’s husband Dennis – after whom the new pavilion is named – was a club stalwart up until his passing in December, 2019.

Dennis’ uncle Enos won the bat in a raffle after the 1948 tour match between the Australians and Gloucestershire at Bristol.

He promised the bat to Dennis, then aged ten, if he passed his 11 plus exam, which he did.

Players past and present, committee members, patrons and guests attended the day of celebration.
