Mike McGrath: West Ham now set to ‘reignite push’ for £8.1m-rated colossus with ‘great desire’

West Ham United now look to ‘reignite’ their push to sign Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd, according to The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath.

Irons manager David Moyes was previously interested in signing the 26-year-old, as he sought to bring in a fresh defender to the club’s ranks last summer.

GSB attempted to land the Morocco international before the start of the season, but the move did not progress to its final stages. As a result, the player signed a new contract with Rennes.

Taking to Twitter on Monday morning, McGrath has now shared the latest news involving West Ham’s pursuit of Aguerd, simply tweeting: “West Ham look to reignite push for Rennes defender”.

In the corresponding article, McGrath claimed that Aguerd is the player from the Ligue 1 club who is back on Moyes’ radar ahead of next season, with a move is back on the table for the Moroccan, who is valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt.

Moyes could certainly have done with having the 26-year-old this season, with Angelo Ogbonna having suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and other West Ham centre-backs having been sidelined for periods of time.

However, with the summer transfer window coming up, it is crucial that the Hammers bolster their squad, especially if they are to enjoy another successful campaign on the domestic and European front. As outlined above, centre-back additions are undoubtedly needed.

Described as a “brilliant” defender “who shows a great desire to progress”, and a colossus at the back with a squad-high three successful aerial duels per game, the arrival of Aguerd could be a great addition to Moyes’ ranks if the Irons can get their man this time around.
