"From what I understand" - Journalist now drops Wolves update on Matheus Nunes

Wolverhampton Wanderers will pull off one of the signings of the summer by tempting Sporting’s Matheus Nunes to Molineux, but a deal is ‘up in the air’, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Bruno Lage is preparing for a second season at the helm, having been appointed as the West Midlands outfit’s head coach last summer, and he has set his sights on landing Nunes before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves are in talks with Portuguese giants Sporting as they look to conclude a deal which will see Nunes head to the Premier League for the first time in his career.

The report suggests a bid in the region of £40million could be in the pipeline, but that may fall below Sporting’s expectations as the 23-year-old has a £51million release clause written into his contract.

Nunes first moved onto Wolves’ radar due to question marks over the futures of fellow central midfielders Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho.

However, there are doubts over whether a switch will be possible as Nunes is reportedly unconvinced that heading to Molineux would be the right move for him, while the inability to offer European football is an additional obstacle.

Nunes is one of the most sought-after stars of the transfer window as it is understood that Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are among 10 clubs monitoring his situation.

Taylor believes Wolves will pull off a coup signing if they manage to persuade Nunes to swap the Portuguese capital for the West Midlands.

However, the journalist fears Lage will have to move onto other options due to the target being content at Sporting.
