Fraser Forster reveals Celtic shirt exchange with Lionel Messi as Barcelona glory night came with Argentine kudos

Fraser Forster says the night he halted Barcelona will live for him forever - and he even left with Lionel Messi's shirt after his Celtic heroics.

The goalkeeper is now working with Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham but he first arrived in Glasgow on loan from Newcastle United in 2010 and stayed on a temporary basis until the end of the 2011/12 campaign before joining permanently. He impressed in the Champions League and drew compliments from Messi in the famous 2-1 win over Barca, eventually leaving for Southampton in 2014.

He returned to Celtic on loan for the 2019/20 campaign for a second spell with Neil Lennon and was inspirational during the 1-0 League Cup final success against Rangers, but stayed at Saints until 2022 when he joined Spurs. Forster has reflected on his career with the Off the Shelf Podcast and was asked about his favourite piece of football memorabilia. Co-host and former Spurs defender whispered "Messi's shirt" after earlier asking questions about THAT game at Parkhead, and Forster didn't disappoint him with the answer.

He replied: "I've got a signed Messi shirt. Yeah (from that game). That is probably my favourite. I have always been one of them, where I am not big on looking back. It's nice to do with something like this but day-to-day I am more trying to look forward."

Forster had said on the famous night against Barca: “It’s impossible to put into words. We’d played them away, I think, two weeks earlier and we lost 2-1 in the last minute and I’d made saves, but the performance we’d put in away from home really carried us into the home one because we knew we’d have the fans with us.
