Francesco Totti: When Italian legend took outrageous penalty vs Netherlands
It’s been exactly 22 years since Francesco Totti scored one of the most outrageous penalties ever at Euro 2000.
Italy and host Netherlands played out a 0-0 draw in their semi-final after 90 minutes and extra time.
A penalty shootout would decide which side would progress to the final to face France.
The Amsterdam Arena was pretty much full of Dutch fans all wearing orange as they looked to cheer their nation into the final.
But Italy took control of the shootout immediately with Luigi Di Biagio and Gianluca Pessotto scoring as Frank de Boer and Jaap Stam missed for the Netherlands.
Another successful spot-kick for Italy would give them match point.
Step forward, Italian legend Totti.
One of the greatest technical players football has ever seen against one of the best goalkeepers in history in Edwin van der Sar.
Who would win the battle?
Well, nobody could have predicted what Totti had up his sleeve.
He stepped up, in front of an orange wall, and produced one of the coldest Panenkas we’ve ever seen. When you consider that, back in 2000, Panenkas were rarely seen you really have give kudos to Totti for even trying it.
