Formula 1: Guenther Steiner gives update on Mick Schumacher's Haas future

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has given an update on how he sees Mick Schumacher’s future with the team, with his contract up at the end of the year.

The German, as things stand, does not have a drive for 2023 but there still appears to be some options for him to potentially consider before next year.

Indeed, he’s been linked to the Alpine seat available alongside Esteban Ocon, with the Frenchman saying he’d like to see Mick join the team, whilst Nicholas Latifi’s exit from Williams has sparked speculation that he might end up there instead, if he leaves Haas.

His time at Haas might not necessarily come to an end, either, but Steiner’s latest comments on the young German suggest that he needs to use the final races of this current Formula 1 season to try and turn things around and add more consistency to his results.

“We are still looking at what is best for the team,” Steiner told Laola 1.

“Do we only look at the technique or the qualities a driver brings?

“I’ll be honest, we don’t know if Mick will stay or not. He had very good races in Canada, Britain and Austria, but he lacks consistency – he should be strong more often.

“We are in no rush with drivers, and Mick still has opportunities to show what he can do.”

Steiner has said regularly that Haas are not in a rush to find a team-mate for Kevin Magnussen for next year and if that is indeed the case then that could yet work in Mick’s favour.

He still has the time to show what he can do in the final races of the year in the bid to save his seat at Haas, or at least show a team like Alpine or Williams that they should consider signing him.
