F1: Guenther Steiner gives Mick Schumacher hope over Haas future

Guenther Steiner has said that Mick Schumacher has ‘home advantage’ in the battle for the remaining Haas seat available for 2023.

The 2023 driver line-up is nearly complete, with just two seats now remaining in terms of needing to be sorted.

Indeed, there’s one at Williams, with Nicholas Latifi leaving the team at the end of the year, and there is one at Haas, with Schumacher’s contract with the team up at the end of this season.

It's widely accepted that it's between Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg in the battle to partner Kevin Magnussen next year, as well, and it just remains to be seen who Haas decide to go with for 2023.

Schumacher may well have been given an encouraging sign by Steiner that he could remain with the team for next year, meanwhile, with the team boss saying that the young German has 'home advantage' given he has two years under his belt working with the outfit.

"If you are working with somebody for two years, that’s an advantage," said Steiner. "The incumbent has always got the advantage. It’s a home advantage.

"If you can have somebody you work with for two years, it’s better than somebody new in. That’s why we brought Kevin back as well because he was here.”

Of course, whether that does prove enough for Mick to win a contract extension remains to be seen but it is clear that Steiner has absolutely ruled nothing out just yet in terms of giving Schumacher a lifeline.

The Haas driver has four more races to stake his claim, meanwhile, with the US Grand Prix up next weekend at the Circuit of the Americas.
