Former NDDC director, youth corps member die watching AFCON semi-final

Cairo Ojougboh

A former director at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Cairo Ojougbor, who was also a member of the House of Representatives, representing Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State, as well as National Youth Service Corp members serving in Adamawa State, identified as Samuel, slumped and died while watching the Africa Cup of Nations semifinal game between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday.

According to reports, Ojougboh slumped and died in his Abuja office when a penalty was awarded to South Africa in the second half of the game, which Nigeria later won 4-2 via penalty shootout.

The Adamawa youth corps member reportedly died before Kelechi Iheanacho scored Nigeria’s winning penalty kick.

The report quotes an eyewitness as saying: “We lost one Nigerian a few minutes ago during our victory celebration over South Africa today at our Sport Viewing Centre (SVC) here in Numan.

“The corps member, who is serving in Numan from Kaduna, fainted before the kick-off of the winning goal. He died before they could reach the hospital in Numan, may his soul rest in peace.”

Confirming the incident, Adamawa NYSC Coordinator, Mr Jingi Dennis, said: “l have received the news of his death last night. I hope to have more details today.

“According to his colleagues, who went with him to watch the match, the late corps member told them that he didn’t like watching penalty shootouts. He then bowed his head and suddenly, he collapsed.

“He was confirmed dead at the General Hospital in Numan by the doctor,” the coordinator said.
