Former Millwall midfielder Shaun Williams joins National South side Eastbourne Borough after being released by League 2 Gillingham at the end of last season

Gillingham’s former captain Shaun Williams has joined a National South side.

Williams, now 37, has agreed to sign for Eastbourne Borough - a team flying high in the second tier of non-league football.

The former Millwall midfielder joined the Gills in the summer of 2022 and was named captain of the team under Neil Harris at the start of last season.

But he only played 17 games that season, struggling to make the matchday squad once Harris had been sacked.

His last start came for the Gills under then-caretaker boss Keith Millen, enduring a tough afternoon at Walsall as the team were beaten 4-1.

He made six other appearances after that, all as a substitute, and there was no surprise to see him released by the Gills in the summer having made 51 appearances for the club in the league.

Speaking about what he hopes to bring to his new team, Williams said: “On and off the pitch I can help, its quite a young squad and if I can pass on some of the knowledge that I have gained over the years I think that will stand them in good stead.

“For me, hopefully I can bring some quality on the pitch and keep us at the right end of the table.

“I’ll look to be a calming influence among the chaos throughout games - and a never say die attitude. I am a 100% team player.”

His new team host Boreham Wood in the FA Cup second qualifying round this Saturday.

Williams’ arrival at Eastbourne comes in the same week that Macauley Bonne – another player released by the Gills in the summer – also found a new club.
