Former Manchester United player Phil Neville secures new managerial role after leaving Inter Miami

Former Manchester United player Phil Neville has been named as Portland Timbers' new head coach ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

Neville, who came through the ranks at United, has joined the US outfit on a contract until 2026. His appointment has meant a swift return to management for the 46-year-old, who was only sacked by Inter Miami in June.

His two-year stint in charge of Inter Miami was his first experience of management at club level, with his only managerial role prior to that coming on the international stage with England Women. He guided the Lionesses to the 2019 World Cup semi-finals in France.

Upon appointing Neville, Portland Timbers' general manager, Ned Grabavoy, told the club's website: "We are thrilled to welcome Phil Neville as the new head coach of the Portland Timbers, and we look forward to making Phil and his family feel at home in Portland.

"Phil's character makes him the right person to lead this team forward as we continue to reshape the group with the goal of returning to sustained success. His leadership qualities, diverse experience as a coach, and ambition to evolve made him a terrific fit here with us in Portland."

Neville, who hung up his boots a decade ago, has admitted he was keen to accept the role after learning about the club and the city.

"I am massively excited about the challenge ahead, and from the very first moment I met the staff I knew it was the right opportunity for me, the right club for me and the right city for me," said Neville.
