Gary Lineker tells two Manchester United players they need to step up amid club ‘turmoil’

Gary Lineker has challenged Marcus Rashford to rediscover his best form while Rasmus Hojlund has been told he needs to break his Premier League duck.

The pair have scored one Premier League goal between them this season, with Rashford’s said strike being his only success in 16 matches across all competitions. Hojlund, meanwhile, is United’s top scorer with five goals.

However, the Dane is yet to score in nine Premier League games with all of his efforts coming in Champions League defeats. Lineker described United as being in "turmoil" and is unsure whether they will finish in a top five spot despite the imminent arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The INEOS billionaire is said to have put aside £245m for infrastructure investment, although it is unclear what impact he will have on January transfer plans. When discussing the situation at Old Trafford on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said he was unsure what impact Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion stake purchase will have.

He added: “It’s a club that’s in a degree of turmoil and they’ve got to find someone up front who can score goals. Rashford needs to find his form, Hojlund needs to start showing his promise in terms of numbers, certainly in the Premier League, he’s done really well in the Champions League.”

Co-host Alan Shearer concurred, responding: It’s a football club at the minute where I just think… it’s a bit of a basket case what’s going on. So I don’t know whether they’ll finish fourth or eighth, I’ve no clue.”

Lineker admitted: “I think [United will finish in] a European position, I’ve lost confidence in terms of Champions League.”
