Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho sacked by Roma

Roma have announced they have sacked Jose Mourinho after nearly three years in the role. The club sit ninth in Serie A following Sunday's defeat to AC Milan and were eliminated from the Coppa Italia by fierce rivals Lazio last week.

Mourinho was banned from watching the defeat to Milan unfold from the touchline due to disciplinary reasons and he was booed by some Roma supporters as he watched the match from the stands.

Antonio Conte is the early favourite to replace Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico, while it is unclear whether Mourinho will target another role in club management after his spell in Italy.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin in a club statement.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

The Roma job was Mourinho's second since he was sacked by Manchester United in December 2018. Despite winning three trophies in his first season at the club he was dismissed after starting the 2018/19 campaign with just seven wins in the first 17 Premier League games.

He went on to manage Tottenham the following year but was sacked after 17 months in charge, just days before his side were due to face Man City in the EFL Cup Final.
