Port Vale are being linked with former Huddersfield keeper Jamal Blackman as they look to strengthen their squad for the new League One season.
The 6ft 6in keeper was released by the Terriers at the end of the season although Yorkshire Live reported last week he had been spotted back training with the club.
Now transfer expert journalist Alan Nixon reports that Vale are interested in the 28 year old. Nixon has proved to be accurate about Vale so far this summer – reporting Morecambe’s interest in Jake Taylor weeks before the 23-year-old midfielder made the switch to Vale’s League One rivals.
Blackman, from Croydon, is a former England under-19 international who began as as a youth player at Chelsea, joining their academy aged 12.
He played league games on loan at Wycombe, Sheffield United, Bristol Rovers and Rotherham then joined Los Angeles FC in 2021. He has more than 150 senior appearances on his CV, including more than 50 in the Championship with Sheffield United and Rotherham.
He returned to England on the January deadline day last season, signing for Huddersfield on a short-term deal. He started one game for the Terriers in the Championship and two in the FA Cup.
Vale need a goalkeeper after Lucas Covolan was allowed to join National League side Chesterfield on a season-long loan. That’s left Aidan Stone as the only senior keeper on the books.
Stone has just signed a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until 2024 but Vale need competition for that position, as well as in a number of other areas.
Manager Darrell Clarke has said he wants to make at least six or seven more signings this summer, naming goalkeeper, wing back areas, midfield and up front as departments he needs to strengthen.
