Former Burnley striker scores twice on trial for Huddersfield Town in pre-season friendly

Former Burnley striker Joel Mumbongo made the most of his second trial game for Huddersfield Town B as he scored both goals in a 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United on Tuesday afternoon.

The former Swedish youth international, 23, is looking for a new club after being given his release at Turf Moor earlier this summer and lined up alongside fellow trialist Connor Malley, formerly of Middlesbrough, in an otherwise youthful B team lineup at Canalside.

Mumbongo opened the scoring just six minutes into the game off a Ben Midgley assist before restoring Town’s lead from the penalty spot shortly after the break. The centre forward was then substituted on the 65th minute, with Malley departing eight minutes later.

Standing 6’2” tall, Mumbongo joined Burnley from Italian side Hellas in summer 2019 and made seven appearances in all competitions, including four Premier League outings, before being sent to Accrington Stanley on a season-long loan last season. He scored twice in 10 League One games for the Lancashire outfit.

Central midfielder Malley is also searching for a new home after leaving Middlesbrough, where he came through the youth system and made three Championship appearances in 2020/21. The 22 year old had loans at Ayr United, Carlisle and Gateshead during his time at the Riverside Stadium.

Town revamped their academy system in 2017 to focus on recruiting players who slipped the net at other academies and have had success putting 20-somethings like Sorba Thomas and Jon Russell through the B team over the past couple of seasons.
