Foreign Office updates Ireland travel advice following Dublin riot

The Foreign Office has updated its advice for those travelling to Dublin following 'unrest'.

It comes after violence broke out in the Irish capital following an attack outside a school on Thursday, November 23. During the following evening, buses, trams, and at least one Garda vehicle were burned.

Meanwhile, shops were looted alongside clashes with riot police, with some demonstrators letting off flares and fireworks while others flung chairs and stools which they grabbed from outside bars and restaurants. The Foreign Office has now acknowledged the incident and changed its travel advice.

Its website states: "Following a knife attack on 23 November, there has been unrest around the centre of Dublin. There has been, and may continue to be, some disruption, including to traffic and public transport.

"You should avoid any protests and follow advice of local authorities."

It comes after gardai said calm had been restored to the city shortly before midnight. Irish Minister for Justice Helen McEntee told RTE: "Thirty-four people have been arrested. They will, for the most part, be before the court today.

"There are thousands of hours of CCTV footage that gardai will go through, many didn’t cover their faces, that CCTV will be gone through and they will be apprehended, and they will be brought before the courts as well."

She added: "By midnight last night order had been restored to our city, but this was a violent mob of thugs and criminals whose sole focus was to wreak havoc, and it is a very volatile situation.
