“For me the jury is still out” – Verdict given on Jake Bidwell’s time at Coventry City so far

Coventry City fended off interest from other Championship clubs in January to bring Swansea City left-back Jake Bidwell into the club.

Birmingham City and Preston North End were also said to be looking at the 28-year-old, who has amassed Championship experience also with Brentford and Queens Park Rangers over the years, but it was the Sky Blues who won the race for his signature.

Six games into life at the Coventry Building Society Arena though and it’s been a mixed bag for Bidwell, who has been in a side that has picked up two wins, a draw and three losses in that time period.

Bidwell has started in four out of his six appearances under Mark Robins and his arrival has pushed talented Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen either onto the bench or in a more advanced role like he played in against Reading at the weekend.

One person who has not been that impressed with Bidwell since his arrival is FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit Neil Littlewood, who would rather see Maatsen handed his place back as a wing-back with Bidwell dropping out of the line-up.

“I don’t want to be too harsh because he’s a proven Championship player but I haven’t seen anything from him (Bidwell) that makes me think he suits our style of play,” Littlewood said.

“Don’t get me wrong he’s had a great Championship career with Brentford, QPR and Swansea but I haven’t seen anything in a Coventry shirt yet that makes me think that.

“He’s been accountable for three or four goals since he’s come in and if I was naming the side, I’d bring Maatsen back in.

“Granted he hasn’t played much since November, he’s still getting used to new surroundings but for me the jury is still out.”
